Loop

This series of works, LOOP,  explores time and space, death and life, through symbolic objects. My idea behind the design is inspired by the Tōrō (Japanese lantern). The original lantern's structure is meant to symbolise the five elements of Buddhist cosmology: earth, water, fire, wind and void. With the sole exception of the fire box, any part may be absent. The light of the Toro symbolises the guiding of the souls of the deceased toward peace. Nowadays, most Toro are used as a decorative object in Japanese gardens instead of their traditional role of guiding the way to the Buddhist temples at night. Yet they still carry the spiritual connotation as symbolic objects and can be used as an object to encourage reflection.
